I was given a beautiful piano and violin composition and was asked to create a piece. I began to think about how this painting and the instruments would tie into each other. “Avec le bois” (with the wood) is a Violin related term. The musician will strike the strings with the wood of the bow instead of the hair. Wood ties into the support I choose to paint on, the piano is comprised of a wood soundboard, and traditionally the violin is comprised of wood.

Collector asked for, “Something Tranquil”. I find tranquility in the sky. So, I attempted a recreation of one of God’s many paintings. The dotted incomplete circle represents how fleeting true tranquility is and the time we spend searching for it. Never fully reaching the height of peak tranquility.

The Pursuit of Equality
Rust and Acrylic on Birchwood Panel
24”
The rust represents the black and brown lives. The copper, gold, and bronze lines represent the reach and determination we have, to attain equality and a better life. The right, white side of the panel, represents the majority. The white, flesh tone, and gray lines represent their upward movement and the lines that cross over the others, represent the lengths they will take to protect their status, even at the expense of themselves.

Texture Of MisCommunication

I created a rough texture to symbolize what we feel when we are not being heard. I used bright colors because I believe that if we see the same miscommunication from a place of empathy, we can be lead to a place of understanding.

Based on a fable by Aesop titled, "The Cat Maiden". It focuses on nature vs nurture. A cat fell in love with a young man, and asked Venus to change her into a woman. Venus consented. The young man saw her and loved her, and took her home as his bride. While the two were in their chamber, Venus wished to discover if the Cat also altered her habits in life, she unleashed a mouse in the room. The Cat, started up from the couch and pursued the mouse, Venus was disappointed and returned the Maiden to her former shape.
